In Ancient times your name was not just a name. Your name was a description of your character. Abraham means “father of multitudes,” and he was. Jacob means “he outwits (his enemy)” and he was a schemer. Isaiah means “salvation of God,” and he spent his life prophesying about that very thing.
The historical person of Jesus, who we celebrate on Christmas, has an obvious name that means “The Lord is Salvation.” But Jesus had many other names.
Isaiah 9:6 says, “his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Matthew 1:23 says, “they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).”
Meditate on those names individually. Take your time. It may be the most valuable exercise of your life.
Today most of the world is celebrating His birth. Whether you bow to Him as your Lord, reject Him completely, or just approach Him with apathy, know that what you worship, revile, or ignore is represented in those names.
